Both were built by the nobility to supply the lakes in the grounds of their stately homes (Syon Park and Bushy Park respectively). The Duke of Northumberland's River was later converted to a West London version of the New River, linking the reservoirs near Staines to the water works in Isleworth. You will have crossed it near the big Tesco between Hatton Cross and Feltham.
